Made in China Diary, the Manufacturing China from the Eyes of Swiss Young Designers
Made in China Diary is a project of two designers of the Anaïde Gregory Studio, which were selected to reside at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, which was launched in 2011. It offers a unique residency program, which gives artists from all over the world and from a variety of contemporary art disciplines the opportunity to explore Chinese culture in an exceptional environment. During their stay in China the young designers discovered their interest for the manufacturing in this vast and dynamic economy. They developed the idea of capturing different forms of manufacturing processes and mapping them in a diary. Claudio Boër, Advisor at swissnex China in Guangzhou helped the designers to realize this project by connecting them to the different places they wanted to go.
“Made in China Diary is a project initiated by the Swiss designer duo Anaïde Gregory Studio. It is first and foremost a travel log retracing a five-month journey through manufacturing China. Adopting a witty and curious approach, they gaze upon the Chinese economic miracle. Anaïde and Gregory give us a new look at local manufacturing processes, ranging from modest family operations to factory-cities resulting from success stories unlike anything seen in our region of the world. But they also grasp the dark side of this miracle, the unbridled urbanization, the negligible value of human life in the global production chain. They reveal how the Chinese have learnt by producing for the rest of the world. The textile market is delocalizing, as automated high-tech facilities are now replacing a labor force that is no longer cheap enough! Throughout their journey, they discover how the products and services of tomorrow are made today, exposing the reach of this new model that revolutionizes the way we consume, based on new production and quality standards. Welcome to the next millennium, welcome to the world of Innovated in China.” (Pascal Marmier, CEO at swissnex China)
Day by day, from December 1 until 17, a chapter form Made in China will be released at http://madeinchinadiary.com/eng/, starting with the freshwater pearl farmers in Zhuji, which produce 73% of the current world production. Don’t miss this great journey to get insight into China through the lens of the young designers.
In addition, a series of images from the book and a selection of objects, that the designers brought back from their visits in China as well as Chinese curiosities, that have marked their journey, will be presented in the “Made in China diary” exhibition. Before the exhibition will be opened on December 18 at the AAD Gallery in Geneva (Rue de Hesse 1), it shows in parallel to the online releases a screening of each chapter night after night.
