Setting realistic corporate goals, a new developmental perspective. 

Corporations (as well as cities, regions and countries) seem to be obsessed with quantitative growth; in particular, with revenue growth as an overriding goal. However, it is often said that corporations should be concerned with profitability and increasingly their corporate social responsibility should extend beyond this goal. Moreover, publicly-traded corporations seem to be exposed to high expectations of revenue growth which are difficult to achieve through organic growth and require alliances and acquisitions, modes which bring substantial challenges.

This talk will offer some reflections about the current state of affairs and a new developmental perspective.

Guest speaker, Prof. Xavier Castañer from HEC Lausanne, University of Lausanne

Prof. Xavier Castañer

At HEC Lausanne, Prof. Castañer teaches a master course on corporate strategy and development and a PhD seminar on inter-organizational relations and strategies (alliances and acquisitions). He has also taught strategy at undergraduate and graduate levels at HEC Paris, ESADE (Barcelona), the Carlson School of Management (U. of Minnesota), the CERISDI (Italy), the Sibelius Academy (Finland), Georgetown University (Geneva Summer School) and the University of Barcelona.

He has published on strategic planning and organizational integration in the Administrative Science Quarterly, intra-organizational lobbying in the Journal of Management Studies, product expansion mode choice and governance in the Strategic Management Journal, synergies and integration in acquisitions at the Journal of Management and artistic innovation in the Journal of Cultural Economics, among other publications. For his research, he has received distinctions from the Academy of Management (AOM) and the Association for Cultural Economics International.

Dr. Castañer has been a member of the Research Committee of the Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) division of the Academy of Management (AOM), and a representative at large of the Corporate Strategy & Governance Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society (SMS). Currently, he is a member of the Executive Committee of the BPS division of the AOM, and a representative at large of Strategy Process Interest Group of the SMS. He further serves in the Editorial Review Board of the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science and the Strategic Management Journal.

Xavier has taught in the executive education programs for Bouygues (France) and SIG (Switzerland), the cultural management program at ESADE, and he is co-director of the program in Cultural Management of the Universities of Genève and Lausanne. He has also consulted for private and public organizations, including the City Council of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute for Women.
