Cleantech by tradition
Basel has for many years been the most progressive Swiss region in the field of sustainable development. Basel-Stadt is the only Swiss canton (state) which has successfully introduced a fiscally-neutral charge coupled with an incentive levy on power consumption. The canton actively promotes innovative developments, especially in the building sector and in transportation. Architecture and design with international reputation Art, design and architecture play an important role in Basel and are important factors in the local economy. Basel architects have achieved international acclaim with their buildings. Herzog & de Meuron, for example, designed the Olympic Stadium in Beijing.
Medtech: from watchmaking to high-end medical applications
At the interface between the life sciences and material sciences, medical technology (medtech) is becoming
increasingly important. The starting point in Switzerland was the watch industry: in their age-old tradition,
engineers started to develop alloys that were later used in surgery. But the region has made a name for itself not
only through its skills in the watch industry, but also in the fields of microtechnology and machine tools.
