On the coming BBQ Lecture next Thursday,Dr. Mathias S. Oechslin, Mr. Chen Musheng and the audience will get together to discuss around our given theme Thinking and Innovation, When Innovation Becomes Sound. Mr. Chen Musheng will focus on “New Proposition of Chinese Contemporary Music Composing: Innovation Based on Tradition”. In his view, the creation of arts is a process to rediscover the traditional culture as well as a pursuit of the liberty of the soul.

Dr. Mathias S. Oechslin
Mathias S. Oechslin is a brain researcher employed at the Swiss Neuroscience center at the University of Geneva and works as a freelance for the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST) of the Zurich University of the Arts. He accomplished his PhD in the Department of Neuropsychology at the Institute of Psychology of the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He studied Psychology, Musicology and Philosophy at the Universities of Zurich and Vienna. His research is focused on the neural underpinnings of sound processing, cognitive music psychology and psychoacoustics and has been presented at various international conferences in Klagenfurt, Shanghai, Montreal, Jyväskylä and Barcelona.
Mr. Chen Musheng
Born in 1971 in the province of Zhejiang. Today he is considered as one of the most remarkable Chinese composers of his generation. Musheng studied the music theory and composition at the Shanghai Conservatory. He lived in Europe since 2000 and returned to teach in Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2007. During his stay in Europe, he graduated at the Conservatory of Geneva studying with Eric Gaudibert. Furthermore, he took the master classes with Klaus Huber in Lugano. He received numerous commissions from the Berliner Philharmoniker, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Commande d’Etat (France), Pro-Helvetia (Switzerland), and many more. He had also worked with distinguished ensembles and orchestras such as the Arditti String Quartet, Berlin Philharmonisches Stringquintett, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Hamburger Symphoniker and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He had received many international prizes and awards, including the first grand prize of the Concours Dutilleux (France), Composition award of the Queen Elisabeth Competition(Belgium), first prize from the ICOMS (Italy), Ciutat di Tarragona (Spain) and Mitropoulos Competition (Greece). Some of his scores have been published by the Alphonse Leduc Editions in Paris.
