All Swiss Universities Alumni Gathering Sees Great Bonding

On the evening of 30 October, On Stage in the Red Town, an art-dedicated park, was seeing a lot of “Swiss red” going on. It was not some kind of Halloween-themed trick or show, though it was plausible to think so given that Halloween was one day after. It was our annual All Swiss Universities Alumni Gathering, celebrating Swiss passion and connection among Swiss alumni network in Shanghai.

The evening started with the welcome speech by Alexander Hoffet, the newly arrived Consul General of Switzerland in Shanghai, followed by our guest of honors, H.E. Jean-Jacques de Dardel, Ambassador of Switzerland to China, who gave a personal and engaging talk on Science Diplomacy. To provide a Chinese perspective, Prof. Zheng HAN, who represented Chinese Alumni and working as HANIEL Group Chair Professor in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Sino-German School of Postgraduate Studies at Tongji University, shared his experiences in Switzerland and thoughts on the linkage between China and Switzerland. Apart from the inspiring speeches and talks, the event has been added into a quiet and melodious element by an amazing guitar solo show by Mr. Ye FAN, a professional guitarist and an alumnus from Bern University of the Arts.

We not only had music for the ears, but food and drinks for the stomach. The cocktail reception began right after the performance and guests were treated with a variety of Chinese and western-style dishes, desserts, and drinks. During the whole event Swiss and Chinese alumni moved around, chatted up, and connected with one another in a relaxing ambience ornamented with lines of red balloons and intertwined with quick photos taken by our dedicated swissnex lomo cameraman. We also put up a large photo wall with a backdrop of the bund’s night view to offer more photo opportunities. And we prepared a box of fans with printed logos of each Swiss university for the guests to choose from for their shooting. Group photos were also a highlight of the event, where the alumni from the same university were gathered in front of the wall and had nice pictures taken by a hired professional photographer.

The event didn’t end until 10 pm and many chose to stay for further exchanges. We saw great enthusiasm and the will to bond coming out of the night and people were truly enjoying themselves. We sincerely hope that the friendship and connection between the alumni will go beyond into the future and contribute to the ever growing ties between the two countries.
